Abstract: | Comments by Dr G.A. Agranat on necessity of sound social and economic infrastructure for areas of northern development. Soviet north maintains biochemical balance of Northern Hemisphere but is also potentially vital source of space for expanding population. Plans to build 2300 km canal to take water from Ob' and Irtysh rivers to southern Kazakhstan for industry and agriculture. Oil- and gas-based chemical industry is expanding in west Siberia; in southern Yakutiya mining and metals industry complexes have evolved. |
