Record #72669:

The Saami people, their history and identity / Nellejet Zorgdrager.

Title: The Saami people, their history and identity / Nellejet Zorgdrager.
Author(s): Zorgdrager, Nellejet.
Date: 1984.
Publisher: The Hague, Netherlands: Government Publishing Office
In: Life and survival in the Arctic : cultural changes in polar regions. (1984.),
Abstract: Describes internal and external views of Saami, many so prejudiced that plain facts are ignored. (E.g. one writer said that they kept their reindeer indoors in winter.) Frontier questions, competition for their land - at first hunting grounds, later herding pastures - international rivalries, taxation, christianisation as government policy, belief in their special magic powers, Darwinian ideas of their special fitness, or, conversely, foredoomed unfitness, and aims of education are all covered. Ends with pointers to political matters current in 90's.
