Abstract: | Two main groups arose: "Firstborn" in west and "Old Laestadians" in East. Tornio valley group left under influence of tight organisation of Finnish Church and remaining easterners became "Lesser Firstborn". Many of these were liberals politically, unlike conservative westerners, but by 1920s most were also conservative. Big reason was attitude of liberals to Luther's Shorter Catechism. Secularised Laestadians were fodder for Communism. Attitudes to Prohibition and status of Finnish language are discussed. |
