Abstract: | Language of Pomors is true pidgin. It is no one's own. Characteristics are described, and illustrated by example conversation from Tromsø in 1919, concerning trade. Studies of RN are noted. From c. 1850 Norwegian traders used Russian, leaving RN to fishermen and Russians, but Russians overwintering in Norway began to develop it for religious purposes too. Vocabulary developed many "doublets" where either Russian or Norwegian word would do, but its use became limited to smaller groups. It finally died out when trade ceased after 1919. |
