Språket i samiske samfunn / Nils Jernsletten.

Title: Språket i samiske samfunn / Nils Jernsletten.
Translated title: Language in the Saami community.
Author(s): Jernsletten, Nils.
Date: 1982.
Publisher: Oslo: Det Norske Samlaget
Language: Norwegian.
In: Nordnorsk. Språkarv og språkforhold i Nord-Noreg. (1982.),
Abstract: Three speech communities are described: monolingual, bilingual and Norwegian-dominated, where Saami serves social and cultural identity. South Saami has survived much pressure, but continues to meet cultural need. Book came out when Saami publishing has been increasing, and language of young can (not necessarily) be more fluently Saami than in earlier generations, particularly time of norwegianisation programme, starting in 1898. In 1982, four chief Saami municipalities had only 20% involved in reindeer herding, and in Norway as whole, 10% of Saami were herders. Church authorities were for Norwegianisation, but at turn of century Northern bishops stood up for use of own language in worship. Even South Saami had two Saami-language schools in 1982. Elsewhere primary schools teach in Saami when parents wish. In Finnmark worship is bilingual.
