Abstract: Differences in eating habits between French and English taken into account when victualling ships for long voyages of exploration. In Bougainville's case, supplies taken on board during voyage ran short, but crew were saved by eating rats, whose enzyme L. galorolactone oxydase synthesized vitamin C in small quantities.
