Abstract: Clinical trials recognising the cause of scurvy and recovery of patients given lemon juice were carried out in 1747, although Admiralty did not sanction issue of lemon juice and fruit on demand until 1795; modern work on scurvy began in 1907. Concludes that, if health of participants on extended exploration is to be assured, recommended amounts of vitamins should be provided daily.
