Abstract: Gold strikes expanded Rovaniemi to make it capital of Lapland from 1869, reinforced by large-scale felling from 1873 and winter fair, for reindeer products and forest game, from 1882. Railway arrived in 1909, and consumption of hard liquor became major social problem. Opinion came to favour complete ban on transport of alcoholic drinks on railway between Kemi and Rovaniemi. Senate accepted proposal, modified, for fair times, and behaviour improved.
