Abstract: | Literary-historical record of vast system of prisons and labour camps that came into being shortly after Revolution (1917) and underwent enormous expansion during rule of Stalin (1924-53). Various sections of the work describe arrest, interrogation, conviction, transportation, and imprisonment of Gulag's victims as practised by Soviet authorities over four decades. Combination of historical exposition and author's own autobiographical accounts with personal testimony of other inmates collected and committed to memory during his imprisonment. |
