Record #46634:

Ice movement in the McMurdo Sound area of Antarctica / Charles W.M. Swithinbank.

Title: Ice movement in the McMurdo Sound area of Antarctica / Charles W.M. Swithinbank.
Author(s): Swithinbank, Charles W. M.
Date: 1970.
Publisher: Gentbrugge: International Association of Scientific Hydrology ;
In: International Symposium on Antarctic Glaciological Exploration (ISAGE), Hanover, New Hampshire, USA, 3-7 September 1968. (1970.),
Abstract: Rates of movement of Ross Ice Shelf varied from 690 m a⁻¹ off Cape Crozier to 2 m a⁻¹ off Black Island. Airborne radio echo-sounder used for ice-depth measurements, successfully in accumulation areas, intermittently in ablation areas, impracticable in brine-soaked areas. Evidence for hypothesis that sea-floor material is raised to bottom of ice shelf by anchor ice and finally to surface by ablation and bottom freezing.
