Abstract: Historic first flight over the South Pole on 29 November 29 1929, by Richard E. Byrd and crew - Bernt Balchen, Harold I. June, and Ashley C. McKinley. Emphasizes detailed planning of fuel requirements and load limitations of the small modified Ford tri-motor plane. Also, precise navigation necessary to locate the Pole and return to Little America after stop at foot of Queen Maud Mountains to refuel from cache laid there earlier. This first flight initiated succeeding expeditions and participation in IGY and present day permanent Antarctic research programme.
