Record #42066:

Relationships of the hooded and elephant seals (Cystophora and Mirounga) / Judith E. King.

Title: Relationships of the hooded and elephant seals (Cystophora and Mirounga) / Judith E. King.
Author(s): King, Judith E.
Date: 1966.
Abstract: Notes characters linking Mirounga and Cystophora in subfamily Cystophorinae including: reduction of incisors to 2/1; nasal sac of male; and general similarity in shape of postcanine teeth. Reports studies of whole body producing 17 good characters in which Cystophora agrees with other northern phocids, and Mirounga with other southern phocids. Suggested that subfamily name Cytophorine be abandoned and family Phocidae divided into 2 subfamilies; Cytophora being included in the Phocinae, and Mirounga in Monachinae.
