Title: Sacrificial cults and hunting rites. Some views on Same [Saami] religion / Hans Mebius.
Author(s): Mebius, Hans.
Date: 1965.
Publisher: Luleå: Norrbottens Museum
In: Hunting and fishing. Nordic symposium on life in a traditional hunting and fishing milieu in prehistoric times and up to the present day. (1965.),
Abstract: Sources for pre-Christian religion of Saami include accounts of 17th and 18th Cent. priests and missionaries and contemporary court proceedings. Drum interpretation is hardly ever first hand. Language should throw light on deities. Author distinguishes between sacrifices and hunting rites. Former involved three parties, latter were addressed only to quarry, but might involve animal's guardian. Sacrifice involved noaidis and much of animal was buried, though only hard bits remain. Only sure instance of Saami hunt god is "alder man" for bear hunt, with "water man" for fishing.
