Title: Some points concerning land, forest and fishing in Tornedalen / Wolfgang Hertting.
Author(s): Hertting, Wolfgang.
Date: 1965.
Publisher: Luleå: Norrbottens Museum
In: Hunting and fishing. Nordic symposium on life in a traditional hunting and fishing milieu in prehistoric times and up to the present day. (1965.),
Abstract: Valley was colonised early, first chapel in 1374. It was trade route and salmon river. Pator, permanent structures, came at start of 17th Cent. Disputes followed about rights, and obstruction of salmon runs. After war in 1809 lengthy negotiations led peacefully to (highly literate) agreements on land exchanges and fishing rights. During symposium, agreement of 1927 was being modified. Avvitringen survey was vast undertaking, but restricting commons led to improved cultivation. Ownership, however, was still very split, with many absentees. Both fields and forests needed rationalising further.
