Record #41625:

Salmon fishing in Tornedal / John Granlund.

Title: Salmon fishing in Tornedal / John Granlund.
Author(s): Granlund, John.
Date: 1965.
Publisher: Luleå: Norrbottens Museum
In: Hunting and fishing. Nordic symposium on life in a traditional hunting and fishing milieu in prehistoric times and up to the present day. (1965.),
Abstract: Priorities of fishermen are catches, good or bad. Seasons, catching method or ground are less important. Other parties see fishing as industry. State eventually came to own rights in Tornedal, based on theory of no-man's-land. Question is whether payments to State are tax or fee. Article describes history of fishing gangs and methods - seine, strandpata (bank weir), karsinpata (weir with seining enclosure), and mockapata (between last two). All patas use poles, some nothing but these. Photographs and diagrams explain methods. Maps show all types of weir on Swedish and on Finnish banks.
