Social stratification in a North Norwegian fishing community / Ottar Brox.

Title: Social stratification in a North Norwegian fishing community / Ottar Brox.
Author(s): Brox, Ottar.
Date: 1965.
Publisher: Luleå: Norrbottens Museum
In: Hunting and fishing. Nordic symposium on life in a traditional hunting and fishing milieu in prehistoric times and up to the present day. (1965.),
Abstract: 20 households lived in fjord at 1875 census. All had similar farming and fishing livelihoods. Crews were family (and attached people) or hired hands. Criterion of prosperity was consumption - "butter and cheese all year". Selling butter or meat denoted poverty. Capital could be accumulated by extra fishing for farm tools or by mortgaging land for new nets or boat. Social inequality, though not very great, thus tended to persist.
