| Abstract: | Describes journey from Kristiania to Kola Peninsula (Turja) with Prof Friis to learn about frontier region. First section of journey was described in numbers of "Aftenbladet", 1870. Turja section describes Orthodox Church, Ter-Lapps, racial mixing, particular places, food customs and historical and literary references. Karelian coast section describes names, methods of cultivation, compares Saami with Finnish cognates, describes Old Believers, Raskolniki, Solovets monastery, Kuusamo, Kemijoki, colonisation of coast, and Turja in 1690, described in Lilienskjold's "Speculum Boreale". Finland section describes northern farmer, Kuusamo, journey to Oulu, aspects of Fennomania, Kvenland, Tornio-Haparanda, Finns' migration to Finnmark, closing of Russo-Norwegian border and effect on Saami reindeer herders. |
