Record #37703:

Journey into the inaccessible / Mikhail Mikhaylovich Somov.

Title: Journey into the inaccessible / Mikhail Mikhaylovich Somov.
Author(s): Somov, Mikhail Mikhaylovich.
Date: 1962.
Abstract: This is an account of the Russian expedition to the Pole of Relative Inaccessibility, the point farthest from the coasts of Antarctica. The operation was done in several oversnow traverses carried out from Mirnyy Station, the first of which established Pionerskaya Station in 1956, 235 mi inland. The following year the geomagnetic pole at Vostok II Station was reached, at an elevation of over 11,000 ft and 875 mi inland. A temperature of -83.30C, the lowest recorded on earth, was at this station. In Feb. 1958, Sovetskaya Station was established as the last base on the way to the objective. The following summer, in Dec. 1958, the Pole of Inaccessibility was reached and a temporary base was established. After completing scientific measurements and observations, the traverse returned to Mirnyy, about 1300 mi away.
