Abstract: Editor explains that history cannot be simply "festschrift" because of black periods, including witch hunting. Olaus Magnus described "new castle" and linked St Olav's name with it. In 1769 Jesuit Maximilian Hell was sent to Vardøhus to observe transit of Venus across sun. Father Sainović's gossipy diary describes many aspects of contemporary life in North. Other chapters concern service in fortress at various times, arrival of hurtigrute, weather conditions, punishment regimes and slavery, Christian IV's journey to Vardøhus in 1599 and finds of old buried cannon.
