| Abstract: | Book is survey of Iron Age finds in Västerbotten and Norrbotten. Saami sacrificial sites are dealt with elsewhere. Illustrations are sorted where possible by period and type. Few deposits have been examined by experts; most were found by accident. No graveyards have shown up in Lappmark, so no real settlement occurred there and most finds were at rivers and lakes, which served both travel and livelihood. Two facts: main population were Saami, using mainly stone tools, and it was trade with them that drew Iron Age people north. Saga and Ottar's accounts are discussed. In time, Saami traded with Birkarls and were virtually their serfs. Karelians are mentioned, but do not seem to have settled. |
