Abstract: Paper communicated by John Barrow to meeting on 11 February 1856, giving reasons for believing that an open area of sea exists at the North Pole during the summer due to three months of sun/daylight. Refutation by Rear Admiral Beechey, quoting several recent Arctic expeditions.
