Record #32348:
A method of determining the strain-rate tensor at the surface of a glacier. Cambridge Austerdalsbre Expedition, Paper No.6 / John F. Nye.
Title: | A method of determining the strain-rate tensor at the surface of a glacier. Cambridge Austerdalsbre Expedition, Paper No.6 / John F. Nye. |
Author(s): | Nye, John F. |
Date: | 1959. |
In: | Journal of Glaciology. (1959.), Vol. 3(25) (1959) |
Abstract: | Four arrangements of stakes, each consisting of one stake at each corner of square and one in centre, were set up on Austerdalsbreen, Norway, in August 1956. From results of measuring movements of these, directions and magnitudes of principal stresses can be deduced. Directions of principal strain-rates are in good agreement with directions of crevasses, but experiment is inconclusive on question of magnitude of stress needed to form crevasse. |
Notes: | Journal of Glaciology. Vol. 3(25) :409-419 (1959). |
