Abstract: Proposes model to explain sliding of any glacier whose bottom is at pressure-melting point. Two mechanisms are considered: pressure melting and creep-rate enhancement through stress concentrations. Neither mechanism alone is sufficient to explain sliding, but if both operate together, appreciable sliding can occur.
