Abstract: | Includes account of Petrus Laestadius and ecclesiastical regulations concerning Lapland. Introduction describes history of missions to Saami and setting up first school by Johan Skytte at Lycksele in 1632, supported by crown tithe from Ume parish. Curriculum was in Swedish, and designed to train catechists for Saami. Recruitment and retention of pupils was difficult. Only in 1723 were other Saami schools authorised, and finally seven set up, with teaching in Saami. Which Saami language was still problem. Four periods are recognised: 1743-1820, 1821-1846, 1847-1877 and 1878-1915. Topics include personalities, reorganisations, buildings, special catechist schools and in 20th Cent. new nomad schools as attempt to keep up herder numbers and way of life. |
