Record #215706:

The proportions and form of icebreakers / L.W. Ferris.

Title: The proportions and form of icebreakers / L.W. Ferris.
Author(s): Ferris, L. W.
Date: 1959.
Publisher: New York: The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers
Abstract: Prompted by opening of St. Lawrence Seaway, reviews icebreaker design to determine areas in which design could be improved. Identifies in particular length/beam ratio and transverse sections in forebody. Discusses characteristics of form and directions of improvement, with aim of increasing icebreaking force, improving controllability and seaworthiness, reducing propeller and rudder damage, and making ship easier and cheaper to build. Appendix provides mathematical analysis of icebreaking process.
Notes:

Advance copy of paper appearing with meeting discusssion in: Transactions. Volume 67, 1959 / The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
