Record #215434:

The Wolf Creek glaciers, St. Elias Range, Yukon Territory / Robert P. Sharp.

Title: The Wolf Creek glaciers, St. Elias Range, Yukon Territory / Robert P. Sharp.
Author(s): Sharp, Robert P.
Date: 1947.
Publisher: New York: American Geographical Society
Abstract: Wolf Creek valley averages 4000-5000 ft in depth and has an orographic snowline at 8000-9100 ft. The valley is occupied by two partly stagnant ice streams, Wolf Creek and North Fork Glaciers, and small ice caps or spur caps. Wolf Creek Glacier is made up of a number of tributary ice streams which have become superimposed on or inset in ice streams and produce a complex valley glacier. The ribboned structure and superglacial debris as part of the internal structure of the glaciers are presented. Surface features of the glaciers such as glacier tables, debris-covered ice mounds and ridges, mud ridges and debris- mantled ice shelves are defined and described. The formation of dust wells, dust basins and glacier ponds, common on Wolf Creek, is traced. Flutes and scallops as the product of overhanging cliffs and lateral moraines at the base of ice walls ascribed to various modes of accumulation are discussed. The marginal streams and lakes in Wolf Creek are fed by direct melting of the adjacent ice walls.
