Biologist author draws attention to agreement with Japanese firm 'Komatsu' to sell rights to mine pumice in exchange for plastic bathroom fittings. Comments on shortsightedness of this with respect to uniqueness of natural environment of Kamchatka and potential destruction of environment. Notes economic future of Kamchatka should concentrate on natural resources of salmon, fur and tourism. Suggests creation of national park at Lake Kurilskoye. |
