Abstract: Describes Zemlya Frantsa-Iosifa as museum filled with ecology, geology, natural history, glacier and history of Arctic expeditions. Director of international bio-station on Franz-Iosif Land presents extensively illustrated account of history of scientific research in archipelago since Dutch expedition of "Willem Barents" to Ostrov Gukera (Hooker Island) in 1879. Describes in detail voyage in 1929 of "Georgiy Sedov" to Hooker Island (Ostrov Gukera) and foundation of first Soviet settlement on archipelago. Gives account of work of current bio-station as result of international co-operation with Norwegian colleagues on "Pomor" expedition to Bukhta Tikhaya (Tikhaya Bay) in 1990, and idea of creating international nature park. Emphasises importance of preserving Zemlya Frantsa-Iosifa as natural laboratory for scientists, and in particular, importance of regulating increasing numbers of tourists.
