Title: | Going with the floe?: an analysis of luck versus skill in the epic polar expeditions of Fridjof Nansen and Sir Ernest Shackleton / Stephanie Pfirman, Bruno Tremblay, Charles Fowler. |
Author(s): | Pfirman, Stephanie. Tremblay, Bruno. Fowler, Charles. |
Date: | 2009. |
Publisher: | Research Triangle Park, NC: Sigma Xi |
Abstract: | Compares drift of Nansen's ship Fram during 1893-96 Arctic expedition, and Shackleton's ship Endurance during 1914-17 Antarctic expedition, with satellite data on ice movements in recent years in Arctic and Antarctic. Draws conclusions about difficulty of surviving such journeys without both luck and skill. |
Notes: | Offprint: American Scientist. Vol. 97, no. 6. |
