Record #214219:

Going with the floe?: an analysis of luck versus skill in the epic polar expeditions of Fridjof Nansen and Sir Ernest Shackleton / Stephanie Pfirman, Bruno Tremblay, Charles Fowler.

Title: Going with the floe?: an analysis of luck versus skill in the epic polar expeditions of Fridjof Nansen and Sir Ernest Shackleton / Stephanie Pfirman, Bruno Tremblay, Charles Fowler.
Author(s): Pfirman, Stephanie.
Tremblay, Bruno.
Fowler, Charles.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Research Triangle Park, NC: Sigma Xi
Abstract: Compares drift of Nansen's ship Fram during 1893-96 Arctic expedition, and Shackleton's ship Endurance during 1914-17 Antarctic expedition, with satellite data on ice movements in recent years in Arctic and Antarctic. Draws conclusions about difficulty of surviving such journeys without both luck and skill.
