Abstract: Presents history of Barents Region, which is macro-region comprising northernmost parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, established in 1993. In 8 sections: 1.Dawn of state formations 800-1550; 2.Social integration and state expansion 1550-1809; 3. Transformation of borders, ecoic systems and communities 1809-1905; 4. Different roads of modernisation 1905-1939; 5. Impact of World War II 1935-1955; 6. Strengthening of the Northern dimension 1955-1970; 7. Urbanisation and growing regionalism 1970-1993; 8. Globalisation and transregional co-operation 1993-2010. Focuses on comparative transnational aspects of history through stages of rivalry and co-operation. Gives attention to early indigenous groups, ethnic minority rights, Saami culture, defence, law and environmentalism.
