A review of thick-billed murre banding in the Canadian Arctic, 1950-2010 / Anthony J. Gaston, Gregory J. Robertson.
Title: | A review of thick-billed murre banding in the Canadian Arctic, 1950-2010 / Anthony J. Gaston, Gregory J. Robertson. |
Author(s): | Gaston, Anthony J. Robertson, Gregory J. |
Date: | 2014. |
In: | Arctic. (2014.), Vol. 67(1) (2014) |
Abstract: | Reviews long-term study to evaluate population status of thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) in Canadian Arctic. Study was initiated in 1950s and, by 2010, approx. 1,757 banded birds (from total of 89,000 bandings) had been recovered. Most birds recovered had been killed by hunters in west Greenland or Newfoundland and Labrador. There was no apparent change in large-scale geographical pattern of recoveries over period reviewed, but proportion of bands recovered has fallen. Several periods of higher- or lower-than-expected recoveries can be attributed to particular events, e.g. anomalous ice conditions and intensive gill-net fisheries. |
