Abstract: Reviews population dynamics in context of cultural, economic, and social transformations experienced by indigenous peoples in Russian North in post-Soviet period. Draws on Russian census of 2002 and annual statistical reports including birth and death rates. Discusses language proficiency, economic changes and ethnic drift. Highlights demographic crisis among indigenous minorities in Russian North. Concludes that special socio-demographic government policies need to be developed and enforced.
