Abstract: Proposed method for detecting clouds from whole-sky colour images obtained with all-sky camera (ASC) system. Applies method to ASC images obtained at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard in May 2005, 2006 and 2007, and compares results with micro-pulse lidar (MPL) measurements. When no clouds were detected by MPL, false cloud detection rate from ASC classification was 2.1%.
