Elatu's funeral: a glimpse of Inughuit-American relations on Robert E. Peary's 1898-1902 expedition / Genevieve LeMoine.

Title: Elatu's funeral: a glimpse of Inughuit-American relations on Robert E. Peary's 1898-1902 expedition / Genevieve LeMoine.
Author(s): LeMoine, Genevieve.
Date: 2014.
In: Arctic. (2014.), Vol. 67(3) (2014)
Abstract: Discusses Peary's active participation in Inughuit funeral, following death of young woman at Fort Conger in 1901. Peary's unpublished account of funeral is most detailed description of Inughuit funeral before introduction of Christianity and agrees with most other accounts of funerals from that region. Funeral and circumstances surrounding it provide insight into complex relationship between Peary, his American companions, and Inughuit overwintering at Fort Conger.
