Abstract: Investigates role of commercial and subsistence fishing in maintenance of economic and social stability, and ways in which residents of rural communities in south-west Alaska (especially those in Chenega Bay, Kokhanak and Tyonek) value fishing. Findings underline importance of fishing as social, cultural and community activity for families.
