The raw and the cold: five English sailors in sixteenth-century Nunavut / Peter C. Mancall.
Title: | The raw and the cold: five English sailors in sixteenth-century Nunavut / Peter C. Mancall. |
Author(s): | Mancall, Peter C. |
Date: | 2013. |
Publisher: | Williamsburg, VA: Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture |
Abstract: | Examines English and Inuit accounts of loss of five English sailors from Martin Frobisher's first North Atlantic voyage of exploration in 1576, and effects on later English-Native encounters in North. In addition to deepening cultural prejudices on both sides, loss of sailors clarified chief problems faced by English in attempts to colonise region, namely climate and establishing positive relationships with Natives. Latest research concludes that men were probably neither kidnapped nor killed by Inuit but succumbed to inhospitable climate and terrain. |
