GIS analysis of cirques on Vestfirdir, northwest Iceland: implications for palaeoclimate / Sarah M. Principatio, Jessica F. Lee.

Title: GIS analysis of cirques on Vestfirdir, northwest Iceland: implications for palaeoclimate / Sarah M. Principatio, Jessica F. Lee.
Author(s): Principatio, Sarah M.
Lee, Jessica F.
Date: 2014.
In: Boreas. (2014.), Vol. 43(4) (2014)
Abstract: Presents first regional analysis of cirques on Vestfirdir, north-west Iceland, using Geographical Information System (GIS). Quantifies length, width, elevation of cirque-floor, latitude and distance to modern coastline, using ArcGIS. Topographical analysis reveals total of 100 cirques on western and northern Vestfirdir. Mean cirque length is 515 m and mean width is 752 m. Modal orientation of cirques is north-east, with strong secondary mode to north-west. Distribution of cirques demonstrates importance of access to moisture source for glacier survival.
