Title: | Wales Inupiaq terms for sea ice / Matthew Druckenmiller. |
Author(s): | Druckenmiller, Matthew. |
Date: | 2012. |
Publisher: | Washington, DC: Arctic Studies Center |
In: | Kingikmi sigum qanuq ilitaavut : Wales Inupiaq sea ice dictionary. (2012.), |
Abstract: | From perspective of sea ice scientist working in Wales area, compares scientific and Kingikmiut use of sea ice terms. Notes greater generality of former, and ability of latter to describe things observed locally using terms that may have wider relevance. Argues that considering Kingikmiut classifications may help to identify research to be done and dangers associated, and discusses usefulness to scientists of collaboration with indigenous communities, adopting local terminology, and sharing knowledge more broadly. |
