Abstract: Describes origin of project documenting Kingikmiut words for sea ice, based on work conducted as contribution to International Polar Year 2007-08 under project SIKU (Sea Ice Knowledge and Use) and following in footsteps of similar work on nearby St. Lawrence Island in 2000-02. SIKU project involved scientists from six nations and over 20 indigenous communities. Describes collection of Kingikmiut sea ice terms and documentation of Elders' knowledge about ice in Wales area, led by Winton Weyapuk, Jr. and in collaboration with scientists active in area. Also describes acquisition of modern and historical photographs to illustrate terms, and plans for use of resulting 112-page bilingual book.
