Record #210656:

Arctic shipping: the ships will come, but not for transit / Frédéric Lasserre.

Title: Arctic shipping: the ships will come, but not for transit / Frédéric Lasserre.
Author(s): Lasserre, Frédéric.
Date: 2011.
Publisher: [Turku]: [University of Turku. Pan-European Institute]
In: Baltic rim economies : special issue on the future of the Arctic. (2011.),
Abstract: Challenges hypothesis that shorter shipping routes afforded by Northwest and Northeast passages will necessarily attract shipowners' interest. Notes that arguments of cost-competitive transit potential through Arctic routes appears not to be convincing shipping firms, citing cost inefficiencies of using ice-strengthened ships in warmer waters. Also notes dearth of intermediate markets (stopovers) for containers and adequately-equipped ports along proposed Arctic routes.
