Record #210628:

Continuity or disappearance: aboriginal languages in Canada / Jim Frideres.

Title: Continuity or disappearance: aboriginal languages in Canada / Jim Frideres.
Author(s): Frideres, Jim.
Date: 2014.
Publisher: Edmonton: University of Alberta Press
In: Aboriginal populations : social, demographic and epidemiological perspectives. (2014.),
Abstract: Discusses causal factors that facilitate or reduce language retention and continuity among Canadian aboriginal peoples, focusing chiefly on First Nations. Examines major differences in form, structure and intentionality between aboriginal and Euro-Canadian languages which lead to widely differing views of society. Also considers demographic features that impinge on linguistic communities. Concludes that language is symbol of identity for many aboriginal people and can act as focal point for resisting assimiliation by dominant culture.
