Abstract: Investigates recent climate change over Arctic and its link to mid-latitudes using ERA-Interim global atmospheric reanalysis data from European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF). Since 1979, substantial surface warming, associated with increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gases, has occurred over Arctic. In contrast to marked warming over Arctic Ocean in winter, substantial cooling appears over Siberia and eastern Asia, linked to reduction in Arctic sea ice during freezing season (September-March). However, in summer, very little change is observed in surface air temperature over Arctic because increased radiative heat melts sea ice, and amount of turbulent heat gain from ocean is relatively small.
