Record #210195:

Mt. Vinson and the evolution of US policy on Antarctic mountaineering, 1960-1966 / John Evans, Philip M. Smith.

Title: Mt. Vinson and the evolution of US policy on Antarctic mountaineering, 1960-1966 / John Evans, Philip M. Smith.
Author(s): Evans, John.
Smith, Philip M.
Date: 2014.
In: Polar Record. (2014.), Vol. 50(254) (2014)
Abstract: Discusses competition within US and international climbing communities to make first ascent of Mt. Vinson in Sentinel Range, highest peak in Antarctica. US post-IGY policy prohibited adventure expeditions that could divert logistic resources from scientific programme, but change of policy in 1960s resulted in 1966-67 American Antarctic Mountaineering Expedition, which achieved first ascent of Vinson and five other high peaks.
