Record #210052:

The complex fertility of indigenous Sami and non-reindeer-herding settlers in Jokkmokk, 1815-1895 / Gabriella Nordin, Peter Sköld.

Title: The complex fertility of indigenous Sami and non-reindeer-herding settlers in Jokkmokk, 1815-1895 / Gabriella Nordin, Peter Sköld.
Author(s): Nordin, Gabriella.
Sköld, Peter.
Date: 2014.
In: Polar Geography. (2014.), Vol. 37(2) (2014)
Abstract: Investigates 19th century fertility among Saami and non-Saami in Jokkmokk, ethnically mixed parish in northern Sweden. Digitised parish records on which study is based facilitate intra-ethnic perspective (e.g. comparisons between forest and mountain Saami). Data revealed Saami fertility deviating not only from non-Saami neighbours but also from Swedish average. Concludes that reindeer herding did not demand large families, and that economic stress prevented early marriages and wherewithal to support many children.
