Abstract: Explores history of fishing on Lake Baykal. Aims to think about colonial encounter in area of Lake Baykal from environmental angle. Traces decline in fish population of Baykal from late 18th century on as result of market-based economic structures and new fishing technologies of Tsarist government. Highlights struggles of local Evenk and Buryat peoples with restructuring. Notes Soviet attempts to preserve fish stocks while also contributing to immense impact of industrialisation and pollution.
