Abstract: Summarises authors' twenty year study of Yupik (Asiatic Eskimo/Aziatskiye Eskimosy) of Chukotka, based on oral accounts obtained from elders over period 1971-1990, and on survey of historical records and other relevant sources. Presents general description of Yupik life in 20th century and documents social change during this period using 1900-25 as baseline. Explains Yupik's distinctive form of social organisation based on patrilineal tribes and clans existing at end of 19th and beginning of 20th centuries. Examines impact of Soviet paternalism, collective farm era with reference to Glavsevmorput' and Gulag, and Great Reform (1955-60). Discusses survival of Yupik as distinct nation during Soviet era.
