Record #209710:

Salvaging nature: indigenous peoples, protected areas and biodiversity conservation / Marcus Colchester.

Title: Salvaging nature: indigenous peoples, protected areas and biodiversity conservation / Marcus Colchester.
Author(s): Colchester, Marcus.
Date: 2003.
Publisher: Montevideo: World Rainforest Movement ;
Abstract: Discusses problems faced by indigenous peoples worldwide when confronted by conservationists who place protection of natural environment above rights and needs of indigenes, often with government approval. Many conservation programmes regularly violate internationally agreed norms particularly where indigenous land rights and forced removal are concerned. However, assumption that all indigenous land use is inherently sustainable is also challenged and ways of assisting indigenous communities to achieve transition from subsistence to market economies are considered.
