Abstract: Reports mode of occurrence of inferred armalcolite pseudomorph, partly mantled by rutile within ilmenite, in garnet-sillimanite gneiss from Skallevikshalsen, Lützow-Holm Bay, Antarctica. Uses synthetic reaction corona of rutile-armalcolite-ilmenite obtained from annealing experiments on rock fragments of quartz eclogite from Higashi-Akaishi mass of Sanbagawa belt, central Shikoku, Japan, to constrain P-T stability of armalcolite at 1 atm, and extrapolates these results to regional metamorphic pressures using molar volume data. Estimates metamorphic P-T path for Skallevikshalsen using published thermobarometers based on mineral chemistry and compares these results with experimental constraints on armalcolite stability. Discusses in relation to suggestion that ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism arises during continental collision.
