| Abstract: | Introduction to collection of eight papers provides historical perspective on how Antarctica has influenced models of supercontinent assembly and dispersion, through concepts of Gondwana, SWEAT configuration linking SW USA to East Antarctica; concept of Early Neoproterozoic supercontinent Rodinia; relicts of older Palaeo- to Mesoproterozoic supercontinent Nuna; and Archaean fragments from supercratons in Neoarchaean times. Discusses unresolved issues, including Ross Orogen and outboard terranes of West Antarctica; major episodes of magmatism, deformation and metamorphism along palaeo-Pacific margin linked to formation of Gondwana and Pangaea; Grenville-age and Pan-African metamorphism in East Antarctic Craton; and possible projection of Pan-African orogen under ice sheet to link up with Shackleton Range on palaeo-Pacific margin of craton. |
