Abstract: | Documents how people in Nenetskiy Avtonomnyy Okrug and Kamchatka perceive and manage natural disasters and extreme weather events. Based on 232 interviews with individuals as part of Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of North (RAIPON) study named "Indigenous Knowledge in Disaster Management in partnership with United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP)". Reveals most common warning signs relate to animal behaviour and appearance of sky. Concludes that indigenous peoples of Russian North continue to apply traditional knowledge but it is not being transferred sufficiently between generations. |
